Teen student leaders from from Marion’s Peer Advisory Council of Teens (MPACT) and Students Leading Students (SLS)  traveled with Advisor, Ms. Baker and parent chaperones, Mrs. Peterson and Mrs. Mongar, to Grand Rapids, Michigan this past Wednesday to attend the MASC/MAHS Leadership Training Institute (LTI).  Marion student leaders joined 10+ different schools from various parts of Michigan in this “Leadership Lab” day held at Craig’s Cruisers.  The day promised to provide the “...essential ingredients for leadership growth and school-wide success.”  The Michigan Student Board of Delegates planned and led activities with materials that focused on things like group dynamics, communication skills, managing groups effectively, team building, resources for event planning, soft skills, and time management.  Their goal for this LTI was to engage in “leadership concepts geared toward starting the new school year and new members off on the right foot.”

This LTI began with an all-group large session where students identified their biggest strengths and weaknesses within their program.  Students collaborated within their home groups to develop a strategic plan that addressed their biggest weakness following the Scientific method: ask a question, do research/observation, construct a hypothesis, experiment/test the hypothesis, analyze the data/conclusions, and communicate the results.  At the end of this session, students submitted their strategic plan to Advisor, Ms. Baker with motivation to communicate how important this is with other student leaders at MHS.

Students were then split into groups and rotated through different mini-sessions led by the individual Michigan Student Board of Delegates.

A buffet-style lunch of pizza, pasta, salad, pop, cookies, and ice cream was enjoyed by all after the mini-sessions ended.  Students were rewarded for their attention and hard work with a Craig’s Cruisers game card to go enjoy for the last hour of the LTI.

MPACT and SLS would like to thank their parents, the chaperones, and our bus driver, Joe, for supporting this leadership day.  MPACT and SLS also give a special thanks to Matt at On Target Auto, LLC in Marion for his generous donation which helped defray the registration fee for several students.
