As MHS finished the first semester and 2nd quarter, a recognition rally was held on Feb. 4 to appreciate some students and a very deserving staff member as well.
The rally began with a fun challenge of "Never would I ever" for Winter Olympic sports, students who remained on the floor (declaring they WOULD try all sports listed) were challenged to an immediate figure skate off. Mrs. Sutten and the student body declared Taha Echoubi and Mason Cruson as the winners. Next the rally recognized students from the quarter 2 honor roll (Thank you to MPACT for funding and distributing the appreciation token.) and Heart of An Eagle recognitions were awarded to the following students: EJ DeBoer, Lillian Ozeran, Dominic Schwab, Kobe Smith, Preston Teare, Austin Sandelius and Erica Boyd (not pictured).
A game and lesson of SEL followed with the National Honor Society students and middle school boys basketball teams trying to get their balloons to rocket their way through the hoop targets. This illustrated how things don't always go as you plan and you often have to adjust goals, timelines, or have alternate decisions be made to make progress.
The 2nd quarter Eagle Engagement Olympics winners were also revealed: the 7th grade for middle school and the Juniors for high school. These grade levels had the data to support they did the following during the quarter:
How to be Eagle Engagement Olympic successful:
Do your part; put solid effort into class and classwork, turn in assignments on time.
Assist your peers, help create a good work environment in classrooms, minimize distractions.
Motivate others; Get to class on time, words to encourage, assistance without stealing learning.
Keep going; even if things look bleak. Failure isn’t final. GRIT can get you farther.
To wrap up the rally, Mr. Jerry England was "requested" to the gymnasium and met with roaring applause and cheering from staff and students. Mr. England will be retiring at the end of February and each person at MHS had a note of memory or appreciation for his daily support and hard work. Some mentioned unlocking doors, plowing, athletic field maintenance, a smile, a whistle, a clean-up or even holding up the SE corner of the hall in the morning before classes begin. All these notes were dropped off to Mr. England as students were dismissed from the rally. Although this event was a surprise, it is not surprising that Jerry England will be missed at Marion Public Schools after his years of service.
Find the photos to enjoy of this event! And students of MHS, keep it up! The end of the 3rd quarter is approaching, stay strong and keep learning.
